I notice by your website listing Guild salaries that I already make over the minimum high at the Peoria Journal Star. Does this mean I could end up making less than I currently do under a Guild contract?
Do you have copies of the most recent Guild contract in Peoria? Also, I’m concerned about retirement health care. What is the typical language in a contract about that? How is that covered in Peoria and St. Louis, for instance?

The salaries listed on the website are the minimums guaranteed in each contract. Other negotiated issues could increase those numbers significantly–such as night differentials, annual cost of living increases, reduced health care costs. The Peoria Guild members we talked with on Thursday generally made quite a bit more than these minimums.

Also important to remember: a contract in Bloomington will need to be ratified by a vote of the members in the bargaining unit. While the company is quick to point out that nothing is guaranteed in a first contract, would you and your coworkers approve something that resulted in less pay in each check? Any contract negotiated by a bargaining committee at the Pantagraph will need to be strong enough to be approved by the workers here.

Contact me by phone or email about the Peoria contract and I’ll get you a copy. Many contracts are posted online at www.newsguild.org

Retirement health care–like health care costs in general–are big issues at the bargaining table. I’m not as familiar with Peoria so I don’t know the specifics right now. In St. Louis, Guild retirees are eligible for lifetime medical insurance.
